Although seeing four different doctors including orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, where all doctors said he needed surgery, he chose to forgo surgery until a later time risking his present and future, saying " The decision was left up to me to play. Merriman who is trying to prove his something by playing with the injury is making a mistake. As of right now he is one of the top outside linebackers in the league, if he is to have a done season or not live up the Chargers will be quick to offer his much less because of his production or choose to release all together because of his production.
